PRESS STATEMENT
BY YB DATO' SRI LIOW TIONG LAI
MINISTER OF TRANSPORT, MALAYSIA

Liow: Malaysia’s Urban Public Transportation on the right track

The launch of the second phase of the first Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line today marks a significant milestone in the Government’s continuous effort to enhance and improve urban public transportation network particularly in the Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley region.

The Sungai Buloh – Kajang line, spanning 51km will provide better accessibility to commuters along the route. With 31 stations out of which 7 is underground, the MRT Line 1 is expected to see an average of 150,000 passengers a day from the current 15,000 passengers once the Semantan – Kajang route is fully operational.

The line will run underground for a distance of 9.5km with TRX being the deepest station, 45 metres beneath the centre of Kuala Lumpur, while the rest of the alignment is elevated.

Already, the phase I of the MRT from Sungai Buloh to Semantan recorded a total of 2 million passengers since it began operation in December last year. With the opening of Semantan – Kajang route today, I strongly believe the number of ridership will increase tremendously. This is in line with my ministry’s continuous efforts to reduce congestions on the road as we expect to see a drop of at least 160,000 vehicles on the road daily with the full operation of MRT Line 1.

More importantly, each train set serving the Sungai Buloh – Kajang line will have four cars, allowing a total capacity of 1,200 passengers per trip with daily ridership estimated at 400,000 passengers, running at a frequency of 3.5 minutes. It is my fervent hope that we will continuously enhance the efficiency of the frequency further in the future.

The project is part of the country’s ongoing efforts to increase the use of public transportation on top of initiatives such as the GO KL free bus services, the Sunway Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), the LRT Extension Project and the future LRT3 as well as MRT Line 2 projects. These have increased the modal share of urban public transportation from 10% in 2009 to 20% in 2015, well on the right track to achieve the 40% target by 2030.

This line is designed to ensure there is robust integration with existing and future public transportation services such as the LRT, LRT3, MRT2 and the KTM. These interchanges will provide a holistic integrated network of land public transport in the government’s aim to provide a safe, secure and seamless public transportation services to the rakyat.

I wish to congratulate MRT Corporation for the successful launch today and it is my fervent hope that this will transform the country’s urban public transport into a world class transportation network for the benefit of the people.
